After experiencing some of the worlds finest coffee in Italy,
the Owner decided to leave his corporate career and start a local
business. The Owner's first consideration was to select a coffee brand -
one presenting exceptional taste and a civic minded company who practice
"direct trade" relationship with its farmers.
Once the coffee label was selected, the Owner turned his
attention to branding and the shop design. The design team's first visit
to the retail shop revealed a prototypical first generation space -
concrete floors, acoustical tile ceiling, fluorescent lighting,
unpainted walls, and an unfinished restroom.
The decision to remove the existing acoustical tile ceiling was
one of the biggest changes to the shop. By raising the ceiling, the
space left its generic appearance behind and became a more modern
industrial atmosphere. To create a focal point at the espresso and bar
areas, a soffit was suspended above the cabinetry. To complete the
industrial look the design team stained the concrete floor with a custom
mix of chocolate and amber tones.
The Owner's request for a high-style space on a limited budget
was achieved. The formula is based on the strong contrast of materials
and colors, and a collection of contemporary furnishings. To ensure
continuity, the Owner consulted with the design team on the shop's logo
design and brand identity. The attention to illumination is not only the
decorative fixture, but the shadows created in the space. The results
are a unique coffee shop environment attracting the discerning coffee
drinker.
